What does a Star Trek villain, Japanese military leaders, and sunfish all have in common? It must be a new Trash Panda Puzzles crossword! It should come as no surprise to anyone who regularly solves my puzzles that there are a plethora of pop culture and geeky words/clues scattered about the grid. For a couple of the words, I was staring at them long enough that they started to look like they were misspelled. Don't worry though, the crossword gets more spell checks than the Minnesota Twins get home runs. (Yes, I'm casting shade on my hometown baseball team.)
I was asked recently how my choice in music ties into the word that I mention in the blurb below. Sometimes I have a piece of music that's right on the nose like in puzzle 28, the music and the clue are both from "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time." Other times, it's more vague and more of an emotion or concept rather than a direct reference. Puzzle 36 is a good example of where I pick a piece that's conceptual instead of being completely obvious. I don't know of an easy way to write out my explanation for why I chose a certain piece of music without spoiling the word in the puzzle. Oh well, I'll have to let the solvers come to their own conclusions. 😉
